Occupy Central Vermont

On Sunday, March 25th, Occupy Central Vermont’s Education & Empowerment Working Group held a panel discussion at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Montpelier about the diversity of ways to change, work around, confront, or dismantle a capitalist system that isn’t meeting the needs of people & the planet. Panelists spoke about innovative visions, real-life examples, and tomorrow’s solutions for a social-economic system that supports people, builds strong communities, and protects our natural environment.

TEACH-IN: Capitalism: Change from Within & Without

Vermont Workers’ Center for a Special Teach-In on STRATEGIES & TACTICS
Saturday, March 24, 2012 from 1-3PM at City Hall, Council Chambers in Montpelier

This workshop will cover:

• Identifying “organizeable” issues
• Assessing an issue’s ability to build power
• How goals, strategies, and tactics fit together
• Developing successful organizing campaigns — that WIN and build long-term power!
• Brainstorming and evaluating tactics
• Determining which tactics will be more effective or require more capacity
• Building a campaign that uses escalating tactics
• Assessing risk and ensuring a variety of tactics
• How social movement organizing changes people’s relationship to power

Join Occupy Central VT for a discussion with special guest Fred Magdoff about the basics of a capitalist economy and how it has developed into the crisis prone system of today. The significance of the huge increases in debt and speculation will be explored.  As part of the discussion we’ll go into a number of issues such as:

*  Why are people having a hard time getting by?
*  Why has inequality gotten worse?
*  Is the Great Recession and its aftermath different from previous recessions?
*  Were the subprime mortgages or other financial gimmicks, chicanery, and fraud really the cause?
*  How does growing inequality impact the economy?
