Website Updates!

01/22/2012 in Communications WG, Technical WG

Fellow Occupiers!

Over the next couple of weeks the Techies will be making various updates to this fantastic website of ours.

You may notice that we have already made some drastic visual changes – indeed, we have updated the site theme. This update fixes a number of issues with formatting posts properly. Though this removes a few things we want to keep, so more updates will be coming. These updates are pretty easy to change, so nothing is lost or impossible to undo.

The second most notable update is that we have drastically increased the flexibility and overall capabilities of this site. This particular update opens us to many – potentially powerful – new opportunities towards vastly expanding our collaboration, creates spaces for more active and free form online discussions (comments weren’t cutting it). Please take a look at the NYC General Assembly website for a glimpse of what is now possible. As a side note, this update allows us to serve as a central hub (or platform) on which other Vermont Occupiers can build.

A number of other updates are in the works and will trickle out over the next couple of weeks. Help is needed, and you do not need to be “technically minded” to assist – so if you feel called, we need assistance with: contributions, resources, research, links, writing, poetry, graphic work, web design, photography, and maybe more.

Please feel free to share your feedback, suggestions, and any other input you may have towards improving this network and our work on it. The primary intentions behind these updates are to improve accessibility of the information available through the site and improve the flexibility of the site to better inspire wider collaboration of Occupiers within Vermont.

EDIT 1/23: a few new additions from today..

EDIT 1/25: a few new additions from today…

  • various people are already starting to take the initiative and register/login, create groups, etc, etc.. this is really fun to watch play out :)
  • for each of the existing groups, I have activated the docs and forum plugins.
  • Docs will give us google docs-style, collaborative document editing capabilities. There are some limitations (like spreedsheets), but this is still a very powerful alternative to gdocs.
  • The forums are of the usual type, and will provide us with better (online) discussion capabilities. here is an example: http://www.occupycentralvt.org/forums/

REMINDER: Martin Luther King Jr. vigil – T O D A Y 5 PM – MONTPELIER CITY HALL

01/16/2012 in Direct Action WG, Media / Press, Outreach WG, Solidarity Actions!

Central Vermonters!

REMINDER: There is a vigil to commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. TODAY, Monday, Jan. 16, on the steps of Montpelier City Hall.

Bring excerpts from some of Martin’s speeches, others will do the same. Social / economic justice and ending militarism are fantastic topics to focus on. We will use the people’s mic to share these readings. Bring candles for the vigil, and feel free to pass along the message.

In solidarity,
OCVT

12.14.11 TECH Working Group Notes

12/16/2011 in Technical WG

Communications Tech Meetup
Phone Conference
12/14/2011 @ 7pm

In attendance: John, Romni, Yehshua, Colin

Rough Agenda:
* what’s going on, status/discussion on current topics
* what is up next on our plate

Status / Discussion on Current Topics:
* the original wordpress blog URL has been updated w/ forwarding from occupycentralvt.wordpress.com to www.occupycentralvt.org, whoo!!
* we’ve created mailboxes for all working groups, to be shared by point people
* discussion mailing lists are next to be setup, having confirmed our intention to move forward using Dada Mail Pro.
* more detailed connection info was missing from our “welcome” email sent out to working group point people. we will work out creating a resources page with more details
* links to this resources page should be visible in several places – Colin has good ideas on this
* this resources page need info about accessing email via web/IMAP/SMTP, general/tech FAQ (like settings in roundcube webmail, changing your password, etc), GA mailing list sign up, etc
* we should monitor the mailboxes created in case a working group does not do so, and messages come in from other working groups
* shared mailboxes and use of POP3/IMAP – IMAP better suited for most folks, let’s advocate for this. if using POP, ensure “Leave messages on server” is enabled
* education & empowerment is planning a wordpress site of their own, they have needs we should reach out to them about?
* RE mailing lists and user subscriptions, and putting subscription info on the wordpress site directly – let’s keep it simple, so as to keep working group discussion lists out of the focal point. we could create a form, embedded in wordpress, allowing visitors to sign up to our GA Announcements mailing list from wordpress, without going to mailing list page
* also RE discussion mailing lists and subscriptions: keep working group discussion lists as moderated subscriptions and emails received from unsubscribed members. these settings need to be update in our discussion list before creating others. should we give point people list admin access? not a problem, except (for now) it would be infinitely easier for tech to assist point people with their needs over just giving them the reins and sending them off..
* once our tech discussion list is updated, we can “clone” the settings/config when creating new lists for working groups
* we’ll meet an hour before the next GA (2pm – 12/17/2011), downtown, nearby library (contact tech if you need details on attending) – the goal will be an in-person admin exchange with wordpress/email so all of us know what to do.
* when creating discussion lists, a mailbox in iRedAdmin is also needed

Discussion Lists to Create:
Outreach WG | outreach-wg@
Tech WG | tech-wg@ ***
Facilitation WG | facilitation-wg@
Basic Needs | basic-needs-wg@
vision | vision-wg@
survey | survey-wg@
Direct Action | direct-action-wg@
Education & Empowerment | education-wg@
Occupy the Electoral Process | electoral-wg@
Art & Theatre WG | arts-wg@
open-discuss (or soapbox) | discussions@ (or similar)

(I feel like one is missing from the above list.. true / false?)

*** tech discussion list currently using communications-wg@ mailbox, probably better to leave at this point & given no real need to change other than posterity.

What is up next:
* create resources page on blog – Colin
* create wordpress admin users for John & Yehshua – Colin
* populate the resources page with various info we each know (mac mail & gmail – John; iphone – Romni; thunderbird – Yehshua)
* monitoring working group mailboxes for confirmed use by point people – John
* SFTP setup for Colin’s easier admin over blog – Yehshua
* reach out to education & empowerment RE their wordpress site needs – Yehshua
* creating mailboxes and discussion lists for working groups – Yehshua & John will split up

Meeting for Tech WG 11/29/11

12/01/2011 in Technical WG

Tech Working Group 11/29/11
Romni, Yehshua, Colin

OCV Lists (iRedMail):
- Not fully using until spam problem gets worked out (Yehshua/? resolving tomorrow if nothing comes up) and we figure out how we want to buy the version allowing more than 3 lists.
- Phasing out Google groups: John had some ideas. Basically picking a date for transfer, figuring out how to deal with messages sent to the group after that date (fwd to OCV list, response message asking that sender uses the correct address), figuring out what, if any, archives to save and how, when/if to fully deactivate list
- Yehshua will check how iRedMail handles digest; whether people can set it for themselves, whether admins can do it for them if they can’t figure it out but want it that way.

Administration/access/

privileges:
- iRedMail has list admins (someone in each group) and superadmins (Tech WG)
- Tech group will have access to the server, but the server account belongs to Yehshua (Linode). Similar to the domain registration, belonging to Jeremy (Register.com). Ownership model is a topic for future discussion. Yehshua will distribute info about accessing server to the Tech group.
- Twitter acct can be set up for an occupycentralvt.org email address, administered by multiple interested people (tech, facilitation, outreach…)

Information sharing:
- List of mailboxes made and who checks them; list of WG lists; what else?
- How to make appropriately public? How to keep redundant? How to avoid potentially tricky privacy policies?

WordPress:
- Yehshua will install WP on the OCV server in the next few days if possible.
- Colin will deal with data migration from the WordPress.com site to the OCV install.
- We’ll look for a good calendar plugin, to be administered the same way that the WordPress site is (WG point people/all facilitation/all tech/all outreach?) so long as that keeps working.

Live streaming:
- Romni has learned how to do it. Looked at Livestream, Ustream, Bambuser (her fav – no ads, free, any mobile device).
- Talked about having a Wiki page on OCV site with resources like this.

ACTION: outreach event tonight at 5:45 at Shaw’s.

11/16/2011 in Communications WG, Direct Action WG, Facilitation WG, Working Groups

Hey Central VT Occupiers;

At our last GA we talked about meeting at Shaw’s tonight (wednesday) from 5:45-7:30 to hand out fliers and talk to people about the Occupy movement. Let’s talk to our community members and make it clear that we DO have a message and they are directly impacted. We will try to rally more folks to come to the GA on Saturday.

Also, there is a Facilitators and work group point person’s training Saturday at 1pm at the Kellogg Hubbard Library. Anyone is welcome, the more trained facilitators the more easily we learn to work together!

Hope to see some of you there!

11.7.11 COMMUNICATIONS Working Group Meeting Notes

11/08/2011 in Communications WG

Occupy Central VT Communications Working Group Minutes
Monday 11/7/11 6:30PM

Yehshua is going to setup a listerv and domain for occupycentralvt.org, which was a domain bought by Jeremey.
Group-wide email list: Yehshua has email list and should be able to form a group-wide email list. Many different lists can be created through this domain as well as personal email addresses.

Colin: Can everyone post to the General Assembly list?
Yehshua: This general listserv should be used as an official listserv?
Colin: Used by whom?
Yehshua: Moderated by the Communications Working Group
The website could be up tomorrow or in a couple of days.

Heather: WordPress is nice because it is clear who is administrating and commenting. How would that be with the new website? People want to get a general email for where to get more information.

Yehshua: Occupy Wall Street New York General Assembly is using WordPress and buddypress. Trying to keep what we have but enable more elaborate forms of communication and spaces, files, uploads, etc. Using this to be able to empower people with tools. Setup an account with Lienote similar to Linex. We will keep WordPress with our new domain. The domain is owned by one person in particular. How can we retain ownership over domain but consider who owns it and how many people. WordPress also has a plugin for calendar, integrates with google calendar.

Colin has experience and will coordinate with WordPress migration. Yehshua will use iread mail. The website will appear similar to what is currently available with WordPress plus additional perks and applications.

Will the WordPress site still exist once the domain is created? There could be a link, a redirect, or let it be. Will look into more information.

Objectives and priorities for Communications Working Group:

  • Communications WG seems to be fulfilling technical aspect, outreach, and communications. After Saturday’s GA Communications WG had been tasked with sending an email about where and when is the new GA. Various URL related to group also for email: occupyCVT Twitter, Facebook event, occupycentralvt.wordpress.com, occupycentralVT.org.
  • send out an email to full list – content: noting time/place of next GA, URLs & ways to contact us (Facebook, Twitter, wordpress, occupycentralvt.org). do we offer a second confirmation recipients want to be on this list, though it was pointed out this was rather explicitly provided to us for this purpose
  • internal communications infrastructure for the GA – wordpress migration + buddypress, email system setup & listserv stuffs
  • outreach – longer term goals – using radio, print, etc to education peeps about our presence

Tasks:

  • Yehshua working on email list and wordpress site, tomorrow should be a good day for this coming together more fully
  • John will draft up email – where/when next GA, URLs, etc – include flier
  • Colin will upload flier & Romni will ensure there is a link out to the group
  • We’ll get an email out to the full group by Thursday

10.29.11 GA COMMUNICATIONS work group notes

10/31/2011 in Communications WG

Meeting Minutes, Communications Working Group
Central VT General Assembly 10/29/2011
Notes taken by Yehshua

* 3 new members have joined us, their email addresses have been made note of – Will/Romni will ensure the email list is updated

* discussed offline communications, as we started off with an email from Glen, read by Will (Glen could not make the GA, but wanted to update us on his progress in working towards a bulletin board for offline communications for the CVt GA. Making this type of offline communication a two-way line (eg, persons may submit notes/envelopes to be collected and brought to the GA) was raised as a possibility and (lightly) discussed

* we identified 3 primary responsibilities of the Communications Working Group that we are focusing on in some way at this time:

  1. Infrastructure to facilitate communications within working groups, the GA as a whole, from individuals, and in all the myriad of possible forms
  2. Outreach to local communities, increase participation in the GA using simple, yet effective methods/communications immediately
  3. Facilitating/Inspiring Group Education – across this movement we are seeing plenty of new (and effective) methods for group governance/management/ facilitation by/for the people.. discussing, identifying, leveraging, and teaching methods which appeal to us would be of great benefit to the group

* we shift focus to discussing Immediate Needs and identifying actions that are needed (are goal for today is drawing up a basic who/what/how/when task list to report back to the GA)

Immediate Needs Discussed:

  1. Improving Group Communications (for working groups, the GA, etc) – we need to figure out how to do this in ways that meet our needs as individual participants, working groups, the CVtGA as a whole, and for individuals/groups outside the GA.
  2. The Occupy CVt Website, currently a wordpress blog, will this work for our needs? Various issues lightly discussed, flagged as not as high a priority immediate need. This discussion was in response to our noting a number of points made towards the difficulty in identifying the correct site, obtaining information, etc. Sidelined for now.
  3. Visual Communications – using fliers, physical postings, etc as basic (immediate) outreach. Outreach takes many forms, and communicates different messages, what is an immediate message for outreach? Putting aside many of the topics that have been discussed here as a GA at large, we identified simply communicating the when/where/etc details of our weekly GA as an immediate message to get out. It was noted we should link up with the Basic Needs Group, so they know we are doing this and so that we can get the correct location (once they find a warm place for us). We will work this out as part of our meet up later in the week – interested individuals will make up some initial fliers beforehand.
  4. GA/Group Process Education – this was identified as a need, as confusion/lack of education is showing in terms of misunderstandings, group confusion, people leaving, etc.. but we did not get further than noting the need.
  5. The Communications Group needs to meet prior to the next GA, there’s too much to do to wait. We will figure out a way

* for some of the points above, we noted questions we wanted to bring to the GA as part of our report back to the people:

  1. should we be entrusted with getting fliers compiled and posted RE our when/where of the GA? – lots of twinklies, good stuff
  2. should we try to work out something like the use of Google Groups to simplify/facilitate Working Group communications? – this spun out into a much larger discussion than time permitted, primarily due to the question/proposal coming too soon, prior to enough education to help with understanding/comfort with the proposal. we amended our question: should we go away and figure out more details for everyone, compile a better, more descriptive set of questions/proposal, and make this an agenda item for the GA once ready? – twinklies for a yes. From this, we decided to make a google group for our own group’s immediate needs (also to show as an example). After the GA, one individual in the GA noted that we should checkout RiseUp.org as an alternative to Google Groups.
  3. did not ask this question, as we were not prepared. topic was on the occupy cvt wordpress blog not being sufficient for an official site, and distinguishing between occupations and the General Assembly.

Occupy Vermont Google Group created

10/30/2011 in Communications WG

One of the folks from Occupy Burlington created a Google group to be a general-purpose statewide resource for all Occupy folks in Vermont:

10.22.11 General Assembly COMMUNICATIONS work group notes

10/24/2011 in Communications WG, GA Minutes

Some rough notes from the brief break out time from the COMMUNICATIONS/ OUTREACH work group:

We began with introductions. Will will be the volunteer contact person. Contact at satchel40[at]gmail.com

We shared some information about our backgrounds: why we chose the Communications group, what professional or otherwise useful experience each of us have. There are many people in the group with strong backgrounds in media and communication. A sample includes:
* experience in direct organizing
* skills in communications tech
* nonviolent communication and creating sacred space;
* sending out organizational emails to personal lists;
* work in radio and tv
* experience in newspapers, copy editing,
* organizing large-scale conferences,
* PR and marketing

We reiterated the basic tasks folded into our work group: INTERNAL
COMMUNICATION, P.R./OUTREACH (TALKING TO EVERYONE ELSE), ORGANIZING (ADDING PEOPLE TO OUR GROUP).

Internal Communication:
-A problem to solve: the white-board is difficult for all to read in the
current location.
-”G” undertakes to find a spot in town for an Occupy bulletin board
that will mirror (updated every couple of days) the WordPress site.
Hopefully this week.
-The email list manages to get around.

P.R./Outreach:
-”J” will be going to NYC in November, and moving to Burlington after. Offers to liaise with Occupy groups in those places.
-Various members offer to re-mirror the website to bulletin boards in other places: Plainfield, Barre, East Montpelier….

Organizing:
We didn’t really get to any specifics on this.
